Sorting online groups in your email

I'm kind of fed up with sorting my mail, or looking through all sorts of folders.

So I made an emailadress for each online group I'm in.
Google, yahoo, and other services offer easy ways to create an emailaccount.

I love the fact that each ones has it's own signature, so that saves time too.

It also prevents me from sending mail to a wrong adress.

A costume?

Men's wear. gentlemen's wear.
Oh my dear!

Most men hate shopping for clothes and fitting jackets and trousers.

Especially when they need a suit it costs a lot of energy to get them going, and when they've finally got the suit they treat it almost like their socks.
In case you've got a guy that uses his trousers on bicycles too, you can deal with a good tip.

One jacket, two of the same trousers.

When they've spilled their coffee, sat on a dirty bench outside or just went through the whole fabric, you won't need to go shopping and buy a new jacket too. Jst get the trousers from upstairs. That's all.

This tip is only usefull for guys who are not eagerly growing a beerbelly.

Preparing to move

When you need to move to a complete new house and make it into your home, why not prepare yourself well?

Get old magazines and advertisements. Ask the shops for brochures.

Cut out what you like and put it in a box.
You can do that for years if you want to.

Go through it once a while and throw out what you don't like anymore.

When the move is coming closer you'll have a far better idea of colours, which furniture you want and where to buy it.

Peanutbutter extra

We're not living in a country of peanutbutter eaters, but there's always a jar in the house. Grwing old and grumpy.

A friend shared a tip she heard in Amwerica during her holiday there.

When the kids have eaten a good layer out of the jar, pour the rest in a bowl and a few tablespoons of honey.
Stir well and put it back.

When the peanutbutter becomes too thin and liquid, save it in the fridge.

Yummy!

Saving money: outdoor memberships

In an attempt to save money we all sat down and had a good talk about out outdoor memberships.

Most sports and creative activities started with friends and we stayed, while the friends were long gone somewhere else.
ofcourse it's great to be in a team, but when one is aware that expenses need to be lower, it's time to put them on paper.

  • Travelcosts
  • membershipexpenses
  • clothing
  • special events like competitions
  • birthdays and anniversaries
  • yearly trip
We found out that some were sporting at a facility that required a lot of costs for traveling.
One left for a facility nearby, saving quite a lot of money.

Others talked with their teamleaders and organised a fetch and bringservice. One car picking up teammembers on the way to the sportcentre and bringing them home after the training.

Worked well.

A simple present: tags

I'm always trying to find presents which are not given often and are inexpensive.
Not only because i don't have much money to spend, but also because I want us to get out of the spiral of escalating expenses for presents.

A friend suggested I could make tags.

Which was a great idea.

So for the ever jam making, collecting and ordering friend I made tags.

I found a nice form to cut, and painted a simple but nice design on them.

because I liked the painting I also made a few bookmarks with the same design and finsihed it all with a birthdaycard in the same style.

Fun to make, fun to give and fun for the wallet too.

A game to keep them bussy

Little ones are not often bored, but sometimes they just need an idea to keep them bussy.

Please two kids, each at a side of a door. No see through one, please.

Let one make a sound and let the other guess.

All sorts of things make noises, like clicking a pen, opening a pencil box etc etc.

Kids love this game!

Boots

Boots can have a longer life when you use inlays under your feet in the boots.
Preferably use leather ones or the soft and warm sheepskin.

When they're large enough you can make a pocket on the inside where you can keep some money.

Monday, November 1, 2010

Boxes

The chinese take away comes in boxes which can be re used.

You can put them in the micro wave, but be carefull when you leave content with too high a temperature too long in the box.

You can also use them in the freezer, but when they've been used about 10 times the box might break more easily.

The boxes are also great to sort toys and other things.

Spooky halloween

We wish you all a spooky halloween.

Here we celebrate the traditional Samhain, which has been converted by christianity to the all saints and all deaths days.

No matter which name is given to the event, remember that the veil is thin and there are many realms we can't otherwise sense as well as tonight.

halloween - 5

Using tomato juice as bood might seem a good decision, but there are far better solutions to create blood.

Paint used for children tyo paint with, based on water can often be washed away easily.

But have you ever considered beads that look like blooddrops?

When you can't find them in the shops or online make them yourself with clay you can bake in the home oven.

You can use a cocktailpricker to make a hole in them.

Good luck!

halloween - 4

I'm sure no one wants to go to school or work tomorrow looking like someone smashed their face with an ax, so please, please, before you apply your halloween make up check if you have sometimes to take it off.

An eye make-up remover comes in very handy because eye make-up nowadays is made to make you buy those products too.
Most water resistant make up can't be removes with water and soap.

If necessary you can use eye make up remover to clean your whole face.

Before going to bed clean your face and any other parts of your body where you have applied make-up.

And do the same the next morning.

Some make up creaps into your pories and during the night the body tries to get rid of it.
So give yourself a thorough morning clean to.

halloween - 3

It's great when you have a lot of money to spend on halloween costumes, but most people have to find funds to look spooky.

Ofcourse you can swap csotumes with friends. With a different make up even your closest friends won't notice.

But you can also rely on what you have.
A black dress or black t-shirt and trousers will do great as a basic costume.
A mask, and vintage jewelry will do the trick.
And how about using your bicycle lock chain, if you have one. It's great not complement a men's costume, and it also gives perfect halloween sounds.

halloween - 2

Children all over the world love to receive gifts, but sometimes we just don't have the money to make something or buy something.

At this time of year though many supermarkets have special promotions.
When you spend for a certain amount of money you'll get a small toy.

These make perfect gifts for trick and treat.
Especially when they're still in the wrap.

Have fun!

halloween - 1

Halloween treats are always welcome.
We don't have a halleoween tradition in my country, but there are always a few children who want to sneak this interesting event into the agendas of grown ups because sweets are welcome.

So they dress up at halloween just like in many other countries and rang the doorbeels looking for treats.

Try to keep them healthy.

So avaid too much sugar, too much salt, additives and the whole lot.

Here kids also love small boxes with raisins, cupcakes, small applepies, cheese.

Wrap them individually and with care.

Carrots and leek

Take about an equal amount of carrots and leek.

Slice them and put them in a pan with potatoes.

Cook.

When it's nearly ready take smoked bacon and slice them in small pieces or buy pieces.

Bake them in their own juice until the fat is nearly gone or the bacon is brown.

When the potatoes and carrots are ready, stamp the food and mix it with the bacon.

Yummy!!

Against muscle cramps

Muscle cramps can be nasty. especially during night time.

It's best to extend/stretch the muscle that's cramping until the pain has gone.

Preventing new cramping is possible by applying clove oil on the muscle.

Some say cramping can be preventing by taking vitamine B6.

Smooth zipper

A zipper can be a real pain, but I'm going to teach you a trick so you won't have stubborn zippers anymore.

Just rub the teeth of the zipper with a bar of soap or a candle.

When you use soap you need to reapply after each wash.

In the dryer

To dry your clothes fatser in the dryer add a few tennisballs.
I've been told it saves 25 to 50% of the time you'll otherwise need to dry your clothes.

I would love to have some feedback on this item, because I hardly use my dryer.

Thursday, October 21, 2010

No mothballs?

I hate the smell of mothballs.

My gram had far better silution against bugs.

Roll a paper and put it in the back of the wardrobe at a place where it can't touch the clothes.

Take a small net and fill it with soap leftovers.
Put the net in the wardrobe. It makes the clothes smell nice and prevent bugs.

Clean cast iron pans

To clean cast iron pans you don't need expensive bottles or wipes.
It's ridiculous how much people spend on detergents and other cleaning products.

Cast iron can be polished clean with one of the best kitchen scrubs: salt.

First clean the pan the usual way. Dry it and then pour a bit of salt on the bottom and use a cloth or brush to clean the pan with the salt.

When the dirt has come off, clean the pan and rinse with a lot of water.

Then fatten the pan with a bit of oil before putting it away.

autumncolours

Taka a camera and go for a walk in the woods.
The colours are beautiful at this time of year and it's well worth to take lots of photos.

You can add them all together in a collage and add coloured leaves to make a real nice autumn present. For instance for someone who isn't able to leave home.

Right now it's still possible to ride with a wheelchair through the woods, unless it has rained a lot.
So when you know someone to take for a ride, do it now.

Peel potatoes and cut them in 4 parts. wash them.
Put them in water. About half under.

Don't use salt!!! Cook them. When ready pour the water away and leave them to rest.

While cooking the potatoes, cut the large stem from the broccoli and wash what's left.

Cut the flowery part from the broccoli, and save the small stems for later.

Kook the broccoli in a bit of water with salt in about 5 to 10 minutes. Pour in a sif so the water can be drained.

Slice the small stems in small pieces of a half to one cm.

Put the broccoli stems, carrots and selery in water and a bit of salt and cook for 3 minutes.
Leave them in the water and save for later.

Peel garlic and cut it in very small pieces.

Bake bacon, take it out of the pan and put minced meat in the fat and bake that. It doesn't need to be brown, just baked a little bit.

Get rid of too much fat and water.

Add the union and bake a bit more, add garlic and leave it baking for 1 minute.

Take tomatomash and add it.

Be aware of frost

Not all plants are able to deal with frost, we all know that.
But often we forget which plants need to be put inside before the first frosty night.

So today is the perfect day to look up on internet or in books which plants of your collection need to go inside.

When you're in doubt, take a leaf anf d go to your gardencentre to ask.
They won't think you're stupid.

You're only stupid to let your plants die when it isn't necessary.

Saturday, October 16, 2010

Water and leaves

Water and leaves results in rotting junk.

When you've got a birdpool, or other water in the garden put a net or roster over it so the leaves can collect there and they're easy to remove.

This is more pleasant than removing the stinking rotting junk that forms when leaves stay in the water.
Apart from the fact that the quality of the water is badly affected by leaves.

Remove the leaves very regularly.

hanging baskets

Some people put their hanging baskets away when autumn starts, but there's no need to.
Even when there's a bit of frost at ground level the temperature at the basket is above zero.

You can plant ivy at the sides of the basket to keep the green look.

When you keep the flowering plants in their own pot when you add them to the basket you can exchange them without problems, and it's also more easy to keep the water in the basket when watering the plants.

drawstrings

I found my wintercoat with an old.. too old... drawstring and suddenly remembered the care I always showed when the coats and caqrdigans of the children had a drawstring.

For children who are caught up in play they're very dangerous.
The string might get caught on elements of the playground for instance and strangle a child.

Each year children die because of a drawstring.

House inventory

A good house inventory is important.

With a list of your most important belongings you can provide the insurance information to assess how high your insurance should be.

You can give them the list when something has happened, like a fire or burglary,

In some countries a list like that also comes in handy for the taxes.

Make the inventory in such a way that it's easy to see where the item is, how old it is, what the prize was and how much it costs to renew it.

Chestnuts

It's time to harvest the chestnuts.

Kids love to do that.

Tradition says one should keep one chestnut in the pocket against rheumatism.

We used to keep a large wild one in our pocket to get warm hands in the winter.
When you rub it against your trousers it get's shiny, but warm too.
You can even rub it too long and burn your hand when you're not carefull.

My kids like to do what I did when I was young: take a handful of chestnuts to school.
When you're hungry they're good food.

Monday, October 11, 2010

Sheets

It's OK to use the standard size of sheets on your bed, but we prefer a bit more.

So I buy unbleached cotton at the market in town, and take one or two meter extra in length and width.

You can put the sheet well under the mattress at the bottom, so you won't get cold feet, and at the top there's a good overlay, which can be pulled up in the neck at cold winternights.

When making the bed you can fold the overlay down over the blanket, and then fold half of it back upward again.

The unbleached cotton causes less pollution and after washing it a couple of times it get whiter.

planting and trimming trees

Planting and trimming trees depends on a lot of aspects.

It's best to go to your gardencentre and have an expert advice you.
He'll know the tree in question, and he'll know the conditions in your garden.

There's a fast difference here between parts of town here.
One part has great soil. Sand, with lots of woodland compost in it. The layer of soil in the gardens is very deep, because it's the natural soil there. It used to be a forest.
The cold won't get in the ground as fast as in our part of town, so there they can plants trees later in the year too.

Here we have heavy clay. We're living on a former swamp, and it means that rains transform whole areas in a mess. In summer the toplayer dries out and changes into a firm layer that kills plants easily. Rain stays on top of it for a long time.
In the winter the humidity causes the cold to get into the soil early and deep.

Some trees can't be planted in oktober any more, because they won't invest in good rooting anymore. Maybe they'll survive in containers, but the chance is they won't have a wide rootsystem in the future and can be blown flat easily.
They'd better get a good chance and be planted in spring.

Other trees will do fine when they're planted in a large hole with good soil.
They'll be able to grow roots for quite a while until it's really winter.

As climats change and local conditions are all different, I'll stick to the advice not to plant now anymore, unless you really have to.
It takes a lot of a plant to survive winter, so why not give it the best start you can give?

Autumn in the garden - 4

It's too late to plant trees this year, but you can still put them in containers.

Plant bulbs for early flowers next year.

Remove leaves from the grass, but leave them alone elsewhere unless it are leaves from the willow.

When you want to mow the grass, do it for the last time of the year and at a height of 4 to 5 cm's. Remove all mowed grass. If you don't it will rot and cause the underlayer to go brown.

When you want to cut trees and shrubs read good information first, because some needs to be left alone uintill spring.

Friday, October 8, 2010

Autumn in the garden - 3

It's time to take your gardenequipment inside.

Remove all the dirt and apply a bit of for instance silicone oil to prevent rust.

Take the gardenhose and remove all the water.
Hang it out in the wind to be sure every small drop is removed and hang it inside.

When you have taps outside, switch off the water and let those taps run until all the water is removed.

Close them and turn the wauer on again if you need water elsewhere.
Sometimes the fgatdentaps have their own distributionswitch. When it's in the shed, be sure the pipes towards the garden are empty. Then cover the distributionswitch with isolationmaterial, because water runs towards that point and the pipe might break when it freezes.

autumn in the garden - 2

Do you have nesting houses for the birds in your garden?
Then now is the time to clean them.

First look if they're still in use. In that case leave them alone and clean them in spring.

Otherwise get all the twigs and dirt out.
Desinfect the little house with something against bacteria and fungi.

Let it dry well and hang it back after you've removed all rotten plantrests around it.

When the winter gets cold the birds will value your work, and otherwise a small family will find it's way there.

Wednesday, October 6, 2010

Autumn in the garden - 1

Now autumn is taking over you need to work in your garden to prepare it for winter and the new year.

One of the first things to do is collect seeds.
You can only do that when the seeds are ripe.
So read about your plants and find out how you can see the seeds are ready for harvest.

It's best when you harvest the seeds after a few dry days, but that's not always possible.

Put them on a flat surface and allow them to dry.
First take any leaves and twigs away, and if possible everything else around the seeds too.

Sometimes seeds are in pods that are very easy to remove when they are dry, then dry the seeds and the pods together and remove the pods later.

Let the seeds dry more time before you store them.
Maybe in an envelope with the name on it.

Insurance

Stay informed about your insurance, and keep the booklet at a place where you can find it without problems.

For certain procedures you need their permission first, others are only allowed every so many times during so many years.

Many insurances have a central mailaddress, so you can reach them without problems.

Ask in your mail to send you proof they have received the mail, simply by replying with "received".

Keep track of dates, so they'll answer you within the lawful time.

Ask for diploma's

When you are refereed to a free situated practice of a psychologist, physiotherapist, docotr, etc etc. it's good to ask for a diploma.

Some people feel rather hesitant, thinking it is a statement of distrust.
Don't think that way.

People who are professionals don't mind other people guarding their wellbeing by asking if someone is a real professional.

Sunday, October 3, 2010

mushrooms

Some people like to pick them theirselves.
I think it's too much of a risk.
Each year many people get ill because they didn't know the difference well enough between good and bad mushrooms.

Mushroom poisoning can cause suymptoms which range from relatively mild (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea) to death.

It's interesting, and dangerous, that mushrooms that are non-toxic and thus edible in one area, might be toxic in another area.
So always use someone with thorough knowledge of the local varieties.

Nails

In the sixties we glues small flowers on our nails, or painted them.
It's in fashion again and I have to say: it's nice to see so many different nails.

So when you're short of a good present for a girl or young woman, buy a set of naildecorations. They come in all sorts and sizes. You have to watch the pirzes though.

Add some coloured nailpolish or transparent nailpolish and you'll hit the right spot with the spresent.

rainwear

With the bad weather we're having this summer I decided to go for a luxury: 2 sets of rainwear.
I think everyone should have two sets.

One to dry and one to get wet.

Instead of coat and trousers I prefer a poncho.
Less hassle to get dressed and ready to go, and less cold when it rains a lot.

What do you prefer?

against stuffed nose

Maybe I've written about this before, but it's one of the best remedies and it fits autumn.
Use sliced unions as a cure for a stuffed nose.

Sprays will influence the skin and glands in your nose. The glands will swell even more when a spray is used for more than about a week to ten days.
But a sliced union won't.

You can use a spray to start treatment. But when the nose is open you can keep it open with an union.

Good luck!

Your boots

Are your boots ready for the season?

Check the soles and the inside.

Buy some extra supporting soles when you like them, or anti-sweat or extra warm, or all of them.

Put them in the boots.

In case you use several, wear them a few days before gluing them together. That way they'll provide a better fit.

Time to (re) insulate the windows

It's time to insulate your house.

Let's first have a look at the windows.

Old insulation causes dust, junk, and drafts.

So remove it well.
Brush the dust away.
Remove the greasy remnants.

And then apply new insulation.

Put it well in the edges.
Check if the window can still be opened.

When it's stormy, check every bit.

Bodywarmer

This is the time of year that a bodywarmer comes in handy.
In the morning it's rather cold and in the afternoon the weather is not nice enough to be without coat, but nice enough to do with less.

So take a bodywarmer and put it over your coat in the morning and use it without a coat in the afternoon.

Best solution for this time of year.

Scan after each update

I want to share a habit which can't harm you but can save you lots of money and irritations.

Scan the computer after each update.

Some time ago I updated a very trusted program, but my cmputer started to act weird.
I disconnected from internet immediately and scanned my computer.

My children told me I was nuts, as I scanned the computer right before the update.

I was right to do so, though.

Turned out someone mimicked the update graphic of the trusted program so well, that I took it for real and downloaded a nasty computer animal.

My scanners caught it and destroyed it. Pffff.

chicken

Today someone died as the result of an infection with a bacteria which is found in chickens. The bacteria are resistant against the best antibiotics.

Because many people have attracted the bacteria and thus the resistance against antibiotics more deaths are expected.

So be very very careful when preparing chicken. Work as hygienic as possible. And cook or bake it well.

Thursday, September 23, 2010

waterproof

It's the time of the year for the northern hemisphere to make your boots and shoes waterproof.

They need to be clean and dry before you spray them.
Keep a distance of about 30 cm and be careful not to spray near a fire.
It's best to do it outside and with the wind blowing in your back, not towards you.

Leave the treated items to dry well before using them.

Wednesday, September 22, 2010

Ask people before a meal

Ask people before they visit you for a meal if they're allergic to something.

More and more people are, so it's not strange to check.

Common allergies are apple, nuts, have to go strong lightning!!!!!

Teabags

Don't throw away used teabags.

They're perfect to put on your eyes when you relax. It will help your eyes to relax too.

Old teabags are also great fun for children.
They can use them to make paper look old.

My aunt used old teabags to colour cotton. She didn't like pure white, so she soaked her sheets in water with teabags.

No ironing

I don't like ironing, do you?

This time of year is perfect to unwrinkle your laundry without ironing.

Just hang it on the line in the evening and during the night.
The humidity and a bit of wind will take care of the clothes and in the morning they will be less wrinkled.

Take care: they are a bit humid and need additional drying.
When you hang them inside they'll be dry in the evening or earlier.

Sunday, September 19, 2010

Towels as laundry

In a small household towels are just a part of the laundry.
Because they're not really dirty you can save costs by putting them in a bucket with hot water and detergent.
Let them soak for a few hours, then quickly handwash them and use the laundry machine for a few quick rinses.

Saturday, September 18, 2010

Clean a bottle

Are you one of those people who use waterbottles over and over again until they break or get too dirty to use anymore?

How do you clean your bottles?
With water and soap every evening?

Or do you want your bottles hygienic clean?

In that case fill them in the evening with vinegar and water and in the morning throw that out and rinse the bottle well with plain water.

You can clean the caps by putting them in s small bowl with vinegar and water.

Photos of your street

Not many people make photos of their streets, but when they're older they regret the haven't taken them.

Creating memories is sometimes so very easy, but people don't take the opportunity to create them in a visible way, because they think their brains caught the moments and they won't be gone.

But something might happen to you.

Photos are a great way to get your memory back, or to keep your memory alive.
People who suffer from dementia or other problems of age can feel very happy with those memories.

So please yourself and make photos of your street and neighbourhood.
Sometimes there are such huge changes that you'll be very happy with the photos.

Heating against humidity

It's the time of humidity again.
Like every autumn the nigh temperatures are going down while the humidity goes up.
Especially in the house that can cause problems. First in the bathroom when there's no active ventilation device, but only passive airchange, then in the rest of the house.

Putting the heating on in the evenings isn't only comfortable, but it's also wise to prevent damp places in the house and the consequent fungus.

So switch on the heating for a while during the evening and turn it down to an acceptable night temperature an hour before going to sleep.

Wednesday, September 15, 2010

Time to spray your shoes

It's time to spray your shoes with an anti-rain spray.

First clean your shoes properly and take care of them in such a way that they ate ready for a complete new season.

So see if there's any stitching gone, of something else needs to be repaired or replaced.

Then ner sure the shoes are dry.

Spray them from about 30 cm in a short way and let dry.
Try to spray in one spray the whole shoe.
Leave it to dry and have a new spray after about an hour, or as the package states.

Tuesday, September 14, 2010

Just a little bit of butter

When you don't want to use too much butter, but you want to have your pan properly oiled, why not do it the way I do?

Heat the pan and in the meantime take your butter from the fridge.

When the pan is heated, take one side of the piece of butter and rub it through the pan. Leane no spot untouched.

That's all.

You can also take a kitchen paper, roll it into a painting pencil, dip it in oil, "paint" the pan with oil.

laundry and spiders

I hate spiders and so do my children.
So I have to change the way I deal with the laundry.

The past years I've had the habit to hang the laundry outside and get it in late at night when it's dry and the humidity can't undo the drying.

But now it's almost autumn I can't do that anymore, because I can't see if there are spiders on it.

So I either have to hang it all inside, or get it in before it gets dark.

Yes, yes, I hear you thinking I should by a lamp. LOl!

We did, but it illuminated just one side of the laundry and with a family of 6 I can't take the time to turn every item inside out.

Any advice?

exchanging summer- for autumnclothes

There's no way of escaping: autum is approaching.

So it's time to clean out your closets and put the autumnclothes in there.

Many people take at one day all the clothes out and have a mess in their home for a few days to get it all sorted.

Why not take it easy?

Take the clothes that are washed and dried apart.
Will they be used next year? On one pile.
Are they OK to be given away? On another pile.

When you take out the summerclothes after laundry before the summerseason has ended you'll wear those clothes that you've missed this summer too.

Always keep some nice tops for christmas and other occassions!

Polish with toothpaste

My mother used to have a cupboard full with all sorts of polish.
Polish for silver, polish for copper, etc etc etc.

They smelled awful and whenever I had the chance I tried to stay away from the firm rubbing of the objects of her attention. That was almost impossible, as she had so much things to polish that it took hours.

My gram had nothing to polish.
She told me toothpaste was more than enough to do all the jobs.
You shouldn't use the toothpaste that promisses white teeth, but the regular toothpaste.

Save money on plants

When you want to save money on plants for your livingroom go and buy them now.

Many plants have been flowering and not the flowers are gone they want to get rid of the plants. So they sell them for very low prizes.

All you have to do is take care of them well during the next seasons and you'll see them flowering again in spring.

ofcourse you can buy your plants then. But you'll pay double of triple the amount you'll pay tomorrow.

Pink eye

Pink eye is an inflammation of the eye due to either a virus or bacteria or allergy.

Often warm compresses ease the itching and pain. You can apply them a couple of times a day.

When the pink eye is due to an allergy, warm teabags might be of help.
A nasty infection is better counteracted by either boric acid, calendula or chamomile.
Take a ball of cotton wool, drange it with the liquid and clean the eye before using a compress.

Some people like the use of honey or salt water better, but be carefull...they burn.

Be careful. Pink eye is highly contageous.
One of the causes cvan be herpes simplex or herpes zoster, so stay away from small children. Babies can die from it.

September and grass

When you have grass in your garden you can mow it until the end of september.
After september the growth stops.

When you have bare spots you can sow new seed this month.
When the weather is dry you have to add extra water to enable proper growth.

When your grass doesn't look well you have to do more than sow some seeds.
Go to your local gardencentre and ask for advice.
I think they'll advice a whole package. Don't thin it's too expensive, because in spring your grass will look healthy again. And that's what you want.

When autumn reigns, take the fallen leaves from the grass and use them elsewhere in the garden. For instance in the border between the plants. There it'll protect the roots of your plants, whereas on the grass they'll cause nasty stains and bare spots.

Hiding some bulbs in the grass might surprise everyone with some nice springflowers in the garden.

Enjoy!

Ready for free products?

Are you ready for free products?

Right now, yep, at this moment, magazines are trying to get new subscribers.
The hope to attract them now the vacation is over by a wide range of games, mailcontests and free products.

Especially women's magazines have a lot to offer and it would be a pity when you miss books, theatre tickets, wellness weekends and the like just because you're not participating.

Fun things is that most online activities don't require you to be a true subscriber of the magazines, so you can't lose at all.

When you like jigsaw- and other puzzles you have even more chance of winning something special.
A great way to make a nice gesture to yourself and save money at the same time.

Good luck!!

Cats in your garden?

We used to have many cats in this neighbourhood.
They all had bosses but considered themselves to be their own boss.
During the day they couldn't enter their won homes and they used to tiptoe around and enter gardens and even houses.

There are plenty of good tips how to keep the cats out of your garden, and an electric fence is one of them.
Not very friendly though.

Go to the woods and collect pine cones.
When you place them around your plants the cats won't use them as their personal loo.

When you place them at the spots where the cat enters your garden he might not even enter your space anymore.

Have a try!

Wash silk clothes

Silk is a natural product, so it should be treated with care.

Use only a light soap of special detergent for silk to wash silk clothes.
Wash them by hand, not in the washing machine.

Don't leave the clothes in the water, but finsih washing immediately by rinsing in clear water several times.

Then press the water out between towels and iron the silk between the towel, if ironing is necessary.

Most often drying silk on the line in the wind, not in the sun, will be equally well and results in a longer life.

Good luck!

Interesting pineapple

Do you know the peel of the pineapple contains ingredients that can cause inflammation in the mouth.

So you shouldn't use the same knife to slice the pineapple after you've peeled it.

Be careful with fresh pineapple.
Some people are hypersensitive or allergic for pineapple and this results in aching gums as one of the first symptoms.
The allergy will develop further and may cause a dangerous situation.

When you cook pineapple the enzymes that cause an allergic reaction are destroyed. That's why allergic people often (but not always) are able to eat preheated pineapple.

Awesome!

Eevn ruines that have been researched wellreveil new treasures.

In Petra, the wonderful old city in Jordania, a wallpainting has been revealed which is thousands of years old.
It's detailed, delicate and gorgeous.

I hope you can see the video.

Against the smell of garlic

Eating garlic means smelly breath and sweath.
The sulphur in garlic can't be deleted by the metabolic processes in the body, so it leaves through the skin and breath.

Drinking milk prevents the smelly breath, because the mild eliminates the sulphur.

Working best is full milk. The low fat and other low something ones work far less.

It's worth a try, because garlic is very healthy.

Let me know if it worked for you.

Fallen leaves

Many people sweep away fallen leaves or remove them from the garden completely.
They forget that leaves have a function in nature too, just like everything else.

Leaves are the perfect place for small animals to hide.

They also provide a good layer above the roots of the plants to protect them against low night temperatures. And...they're a fertiliser.

When you don't like the colour, don't like what I wrote above, consider putting them on a compost heap.

You shouldn't put too many leaves on top of each other, but you can mix tehm with sand and other items.

Gratitude and friends

Do you ever thank your friends for being the person they are?
So many times friends are taken for granted.
They deserve far better.

Why not buy them a nice present, or organise a surprise party?

I once had a friend who wrote down everything I'd done for him during three months.
That was quite a list and I'd never realised before how much I'd done for him.
For each act of kindness he gave me a beautiful rose.

That was quite a bouquet.
I've never been moer happy with a present than the day he gave me that one.

Collect seeds

It's time to collect seeds from the plants in your garden.

Put them in a plastic container when you take them from the plants and inside the house spread them on white paper or t-towels.
Not on newspaper, because the ink might cause problems.

Let the seeds dry a bit.

Popping seeds can best be put in a box with a t-towel over it.

After a few hours to a day take the seeds themselves and put them into another container to dry a bit more.

Then store them in an envelope with name and date on it.

smelly knives

The smell of unions can stick on everything and cause a nasty smell for days.
Even knives can keep the smell alive.

But not when you use my trick.

Pull them quickly through a flame.

Yes, you hear it well.

Don't smear oil or butter on them.
Kust make them clean and dry and then pull them through a flame.

The smell will be gone.

Good luck!

Fit a candle

Tell me, how often have you been annoyed by the fact that you didn't buy the right size of candle for the holder.

Oh, I have had so many beautiful candles and I've even bought new holders for the perfect fit.

I'm happy I know better now than run to the shops.

I just hold the bottom of the candle in hot water until it's soft.

Then I press the part in shape for the holder, fit it, and wait until it has cooled down.

Works great!!

Friday, August 27, 2010

Be prepared

I can't believe that people aren't prepared for loss of electricity or a disaster.

It's so easy to put at a few centrale places in the house a few candles and matches.
They eat nothing, do nothing.

But when the power goes, these candles can be life saving.

Do you have candles available ?

Against ants

When ants have the idea that your house is their domain you're in trouble.

You have to take an effort to change the odds and to win against their long line of marching soldiers in your kitchen and at other places.

Sounding a different beat than the ants-march isn't enough.

But I know something which really works to show them their place: outside.

Use talkum powder.

They hate to walk with powder on their little feet.

So use that knowledge and their fine marching soldiers will refuse the commands to enter your house.

children's tattoo

Don't you love those lovely children's tattoos?
You can put them on everything, the window, a mug,a lunchbox, oh and on the child.

But how to remove the tattoo?

You can't use sandpaper of chemicals on a child's skin.

So use peanutbutter.
Let it soak in for a while and then rub.

It helps a lot!

Salmon wraps

Take a mexican wrap.
Spread it on the table in front of you.

With a knife spread herbal cheese on it.
Preferably french soft cheese with herbs.

On it: a thin layer of salmon.

And then: large thin slices of cucumber.

Rol the wrap and slice it in 3 cm long pieces.

Eat!

Yummy.

Stung by a mosquito?

Are you stung by a mosquito and you can't find the special anti-itch cream that smells so nice?
And those spots are growing and colour redder and redder. Ands the itching is getting worse.

You'd better run for the vinegar.

It helps very well.

Just put a bit on a cotton ball or on kitchen paper and put it on the spot.

It really, really helps!

Sunday, August 22, 2010

Take a plastic bag with you.

Never leave your house without taking a plastic bag with you.

During this time of year it comes in handy for... fruit.

Take a walk in the woods and look around. You'll be able to find brambles and blueberries.

Don't take them from plants near the highway or near streets.
Walk a bit further into the wood, so the fruit won't contain pollution.

Need new furniture?

Do you need new furniture and you've got no money?

Ask your friends. Maybe someone in their family is moving and wants to find a new home for furniture.

Look at the leaflets at the supermarket. Some people first try to give furniture away before the throw it away.

Some councils have a special recycle unit. Go and have a look.

And ofcourse second hand shops are OK.
Ask the owner to keep your adress and warn you when he can't sell something and is OK with you picking something up for nothing. It's always better than throwing furniture away.

Good luck!

Almost too late for potatoes?

Ugh... I almost forgot to boil the potatoes for dinner.
The vegetables were almost ready, but the potatoes... they were forgotten.

I feel lucky that someone gave me the tip to add a bit of vinegar to the water and boil them.
Less time needed.

Smell of union

Slicing union is not only a burden to your eyes.
The smell on your fingers can be very terrible too.

Washing with soap doesn't help, but I know what helps, because my grandmother taught me.

A few drops of milk are enough to rub in your hands and make the smell of unions disappear.

Have a try!

Agenda

Children buy agenda's that start at the beginning of the schoolyear.
Grown ups buy agenda's that start with: january 1.

It's far more convenient for moms of schoolkids to have an agenda that starts with the schoolyear too.

You can use a schoolagenda for even more comvenience, because you can write down schedules, and all sorts of other things which are important for moms of schoolkids.

Beads and buttons

Children love beads and buttons, so always keep them and never throw them away.

Glueing several buttons on top of each other, with the holes alligned makes a perfect stand for incense. To make the small tower stable you can glue them on a small tile.

You can also make lovely hairaccessories with buttons, ribbons and... small bells.

Good luck!

take a pen with you

It's a good decision to take a pen and a piece of paper with you wherever you go.
But be carefull.

Penns can cause nasty stains in your clothes.

Wear the tip to the top.

Easy to remember isn't it?

Seeds

Some plants already have seeds waiting to be harvested.

Take an envelope, write down the date, place where you gathered the seeds, and the kind of seed.

Harvest the seeds and let them dry.

Close the envelope and put it at a dry place.

Until next year spring.

Be prepared for a new job-application

There's nothing wrong to prepare yourself for a job-application even when you're not looking for a job.

It saved time and nerves when you have a list of what you have done in your life, and a list of the education you have had.

When you see a nice job in the paper, all you have to do is read it, accentuate what is needed for the job and print it.

free furniture

This time of year is favorite for those who want to move house.
The result is that they can't get rid of their furniture and a look at the marketsites online can have a great result.
I saw quite some furniture offered for free.

Wow!

keeping appointments

Some people have troubles keeping appointments.
They can burden the people around them for days telling over and over about the dentist appointment they've made, and when the day has arrived they think of it when it's too late.

You can use one of those online agenda's from where you can send yourself an automated mail on the day or a day before.
Bravenet had an agenda like that. I don't know if they still have.

Otherwise ask a friend to keep your appointment in his or her aganda and mail you or give you a call.

Good luck!

No mess when cooking milk

Hot milk is a good ingredient of hot chocolate, but boiling or cooking milk can be a messy event when you're not in time to switch the flame off.

When you rub some butter around the pan the milk won't boil over.

Are you just entering the kitchen when the bubbly boiling milk has reached the rim and is going to make a mess of your furnace.
Pour a spoonful of sugar on it.

Good luck!

Sock stuck in vacuum cleaner?

I'm sure I'm not the only one who has been surprised by a sock.

At one moment it was on the floor and the next moment it was sucked up by the vacuum cleaner and the result was that no air came out or in the hose.

Take a handful of marbles, go somewhere safe, like in the garden en shake the marbles in the hose right on top of the sock.

It'll come out.

The marbles too, so when you shake above a bucket you'll have them back the easiest way.

Sunday, August 8, 2010

Save kernels

We can do a lot of things with the kernels of fruit.

Those which haven't undergone radiation can be planetd, others can be made into beads or can be used to texture the earth in the garden.
They're also a nice decoration around plants, and you can even die them or use them in a vase to keep the flowers standing straight.

I bet you know some other used too.

planting bulbs for autum

This is the perfect time to plant bulbs for the second part of the year.

Be careful when you buy them as they should have the right year on the package.
Aslo read about what kind of compost or sand they need, how much water and if they need sun or shadow.

You can plant some small plants on top, so you want have to stare to empty places in your garden.

Good luck!

Friday, August 6, 2010

Re-use glass curtains

Many people throw away the glass curtains when they're off white.

They forget the many uses for these curtains.

Ever wanted to hang up yoghurt?
You can put yoghurt in a clean square of glass curtain, put the corners together with a thread and hang it.
The result if thick yoghurt which can be used as an ingredient in dishes or to eat just like that.

You can use glass curtains too to cover plates to keep the flies away.

After the BBQ

Cleaning the BBQ isn't fun.

But it won't be such a problem when you put the elements in the grass during the night, or between a wet paper.
The dirt will come off easily and you'll be ready cleaning in no time.

replant your lavender

It´s precisely the time now to prepare your lavender for a beautiful next year.

Dig the plant out.

Make the hole deeper... about 20 to 25 cm.

Replant the lavender and spread the branches. Put earth or compost between them.

That´s it.

Good luck!

Dirt from flies

Dirt from flies on the windowsill. That looks awfull.

After cleaning your windows take a spray and fill it with washing up liquid. Preferable a kind that doesn't have too much colour.

Spray it on the windowsill.

The dirt of flies will wash away in the rain or when you spray water on top of it.

against bugs

Do you know that aluminium and cucumber put together generate a smell that repells bugs?

Well, you know now.

A chemical reaction creates vapours we can't smell, doesn't harm plants, but keeps the bugs away.

But mind you, some birds and other animals need the bugs to stay alive.
When the bugs are gone the other animals will leave too.

Cheap books

Maybe I've given this tip before, but I'm sure you won't mind to read it again.

Many people are not aware that their library disposes itself from old books once in a while.
Instead of exchanging books between libraries they throw them away or sell them for a very low prize.

Ours sells books for 1 euro, sometimes even 5 for 1 euro.

These books are most of the time in good condition, sometimes completely new and a few times they're read to shreds. Well, in that case I don't buy them.

The only thing is that the library has put plastic over the covers and has put a number on them.
I can deal with that.
