Bodywarmer

This is the time of year that a bodywarmer comes in handy.
In the morning it's rather cold and in the afternoon the weather is not nice enough to be without coat, but nice enough to do with less.

So take a bodywarmer and put it over your coat in the morning and use it without a coat in the afternoon.

Best solution for this time of year.

saw or ax for emergency situations

The terrible weather of this week has made many people aware that bad things happen within moments.

Keep a saw and/or an ax at your house ..in case...

Many trees were pulled out of the ground and smashed over cars by the storms.

All those axes and saws came in handy to clear our streets.

small children and high temperatures

Small children sometimes seem to be unaffected by high temperatures, whereas in fact they can have many problems dealing with it.

Don't put them in the sun, but at a place in the shadow or at a cool place, but not in the draft.

Dress them lightly, and put a towel or other absorbing fabric over anything plastic.

Give them plenty to drink.

These are just the three basic advices.
There are many more.

sleeping in the summer

We're in the middle of a heatwave and sleeping seems to be an art.

But not with this tip.

Put a few bottles with water in the freezer.

Before going to sleep put them on a deep plate in front of the ventilator.

The air is pushed along the bottles by the ventilator and the cooled air is blown your way.

Have a nice night.

Be careful with your neck in summer

We're expecting a heatwave for this week, and because of that a memory popped up.

It's about 10 years ago that we were attending a festival in a bright and forceful sun.
We put sunlotion on our faces, shoulders, noses and even the rim of the ears, but I came home with burns....in my neck.

So don't forget to wear either a hat, long hair, a skarf or sunlotion in your neck.

summer nights

Right at the moment it's so humid that this tip is not wise, but during not humid summernights I can give you a tip.

Take a spray and fill it with plain water.
Add one small drop of peppermint oil.

When you wake up feeling unhappy because of the high temperature, give yourself a spray.

I'm sure you'll feel better.

raincoat

Some shops sell about everything and there you'll have to be to find a very cheap raincoat.
It's made of thin plastic and you need to be very careful when you put it on.
But it keeps you dry for one time use.

Why I mention it?

It's a very thin, small package and you can take it with you in your coatpocket or handbag.

For emergencies. Because it's not very environment friendly.

Feeling warm as fast as possible

Now King Winter is ruling in such a fierce way some old advice popped up in my mind.

When you come home all shivering and cold you want to take a warm drink to feel better.

Try a glass with cold water instead.
Your body has to work to give it the right temperature, which will make you feel warm sooner than after a hot drink.

leaking shoes during freezing weather

Leaking shoes are unpleasant when it rains, but they can be real killers when it's freezing and you have to walk a long stretch.

Ofcourse you can try waterrepellant spray and all sorts of other solutions on the outside, including putting chewing gum in a hole and taping it off.

At the inside you can use some materials restaurants will be able to supply when you can't buy them at the place where you are.

You need aluminium foil, scissors and a newpaper.

Cut the form of your foot in a few layers of newspaper and use the form to cut a couple of layers of foil.
Start to male a sole with a few layers of aluminium foil, then paper, then...etc.

Cut a large piece, put the sole in and wrap it all around your foot.
Cut some extra pieces for at the top of the foot, to cover the draft coming through the lip of the shoe.

When you think it all will tear when you go into your shoe, you can use another layer.

Go carefully in your shoe and enjoy the fact that you're protected for quite a while.

When the shoe closes too well it might prevent a good blood supply, so watch out.

eyes and winter

Winter is hitting hard.

It's fun for young people who can enjoy themselves with all the wintersports and -plays.
I hope they also want to help older people with cleaning their pavement and do some shopping for them.

Now the combination of storm and very low temperatures is expected it's important to protect your eyes. The moisture makes them very vulnerable for damage.

Those who wear glasses know how much protection they provide.

But with storm regular glasses might not be enough.

Buy safetly glasses at the local DIY shop. They protect the eyes in a perfect way.

zipper of coat not closing

When the zipper of your coat is not closing you can try to make it work by running a candle over the zipper. It should make opening and closing a smoother activity.

When you can't make it work, and you've got no bottons to make it work, put an old cardigan over the coat.

Wear on your body an opened paper that covers the front of your upper body.
The paper is a good and very old fashioned isolation.

The cardigan should keep your coat closed. You can also try tape to close your coat. Especially sparadrap/hechtpleister/leukoplast works great, but be careful, the adhesive leaves spots which are not easy to remove.
